Probably the first thing that I learnt is not to move house! But as I am a real estate agent and make a living from people moving house, here are some useful insights that might help you when you are moving house.
Take the opportunity to minimise your life. Start early and go through and donate of all those clothes that you no longer wear. Then work out what books that you want to keep and donate the rest. You are starting to get the picture. We did not do this!
I have been that one exercise you can undertake is that you put a sticker on everything that you have in your house. If you use that item you take the sticker off. After 6 months you go through your house and anything that you still have stickers on you donate!
So after minimising your life you now have to pack. Be strategic in your packing. Pack room by room and label the boxes so that when you move in you can put those boxes directly into the room that you want them in and get down to unpacking.
Must have is a removalist. Be sure to book them early. Talk to your removalist and get an idea of how big their truck is and what you can fit into that truck. Most people are in a position where they have to have all their stuff out of their house by settlement and then into the new house on the same day. If you do not know how much of your stuff will fit into the truck you might be in a position where you still have your stuff in your old house at settlement time and that can lead to all sorts of stress for all parties involved.
