In an article published in the Sunday Mail on 6 April 2025, the Lockyer Valley was listed as one of the most expensive areas to insure a house.
The article stated that the average price for home and contents insurance is the Lockyer Valley is $9285.
In the list of insurance prices only Brisbane and Mackay/Whitsunday was more expensive.
The article listed the source of these figures as Finder.
I find this astounding as they list the price of insurance for Toowoomba at $1501 and Scenic Rim at $2453.
Now I live in Gatton and I am insured with Suncorp and our insurance policy was just over $3000. I believe that is too high and I was expecting an increase after getting a new roof thanks to the hail storm a couple of Christmas’ ago. However, the policy has actually decreased slightly, not majorly.
The article listed that the Lockyer Valley is flood prone, which it is, however, I find it bizarre that Toowoomba is so cheap given that it flooded in 2011.
Also the Lockyer Valley is more expensive that Townsville, who experiences cyclones.
Insurance costs never seem to decrease, even though you can go 10 plus years without a claim. It always seems that whenever there is a weather event, that there is a dramatic increase in insurance coming afterwards.
If you feel comfortable, let me know how much your insurance is.
